Can i get my hair highlighted in a salon even though i have used dark brown box dye?

I used dark brown hair dye (and i mean the $3.00 stuff) about 5 months ago and i really want to go to a salon and get my hair highlighted. a few years ago a salon person said it was impossible to use salon dye over box dye.... is this true?Can i get my hair highlighted in a salon even though i have used dark brown box dye?

i've never heard of that..i dyed my hair all the time with box dye so i had like three different layers of colors in my hair and they corrected the color and put highlights it might cost a lil more because thier using more dye but it works trust me i've actually done it.!
